‘’There is always a route opener. Once they realize that it is an emergency vehicle, instead of stopping you they will show you where to pass,’’ Kyobe said.
However, they accuse some UPDF officers of obstructing the emergency ambulance vehicles with impunity. Some of the ambulance operators said some army generals instead block the ambulances. This is so as to secure themselves the right of way.
One of the trainees said there is always conflict when an ambulance encounters an army official. The ambulance driver says they are taking a patient and the army official also wants to prove that he is a big person.
Kyobe also expressed concern about the increasing number of private vehicles that are fitted with sirens. Apparently, these cars also claim the right of way. He requested the government to do something about this. Because one can think it is an ambulance coming, only to see ‘UBG…something’.
On the other hand, they cautioned ambulance operators about the unnecessary use of sirens. Especially for non-emergency activities.
‘’Ugandans have lost hope (in some ambulance operators). When the siren is on, some literally refuse to give way. Because, in their experience, some people use sirens to get out of jam,’’ Mbale city Resident Commissioner, Pamela Watuwa said.
