Prince William and Duchess Catherine are the quintessential couple of our day.[9] Not only does the royal duo have immense respect for one another, but they also seem to be immensely happy and in love more or less all the time.[5] But given how obvious it is that William and Kate are the best of friends, why is it that they never seem to hold hands or show other forms of physical affection in public?[2]

As it turns out, the answer is simple. People interviewed Myka Meier, an etiquette expert, [1]to figure out why Kate and her husband so rarely seem to make public contact.[2] While she explained that there’s no official rule in place that the monarchy isn’t allowed to be physically affectionate in public, the reason they aren’t is simply a matter of decorum.[9]
“The likely reasoning is more that while travelling on a tour such as the India trip, [11]technically the couple are working representatives of British Monarchy,” she said. “The couple are likely to show very little PDA,[8] if any, to remain professional during their designated roles abroad.”
Basically, the two are on the job and like most people, [6]aren’t going to be making out with their spouse while they’re supposed to be working. [9]As People pointed out, Prince William and Kate also tend to be much more relaxed about their PDA when attending lighthearted public events, so any die-hard fans of the couple need not worry about the lack of handholding.[5]
