President Vladimir Putin’s recent decision to reject an immediate and full ceasefire in Ukraine has sparked controversy. During a call with US President Donald Trump, Putin agreed only to halt attacks on energy infrastructure, disregarding the comprehensive month-long ceasefire proposal that Trump’s team had negotiated with Ukrainians in Saudi Arabia.
Putin insisted that a comprehensive truce could only be successful if foreign military aid and intelligence sharing with Ukraine were terminated, conditions that Ukraine’s European allies have adamantly opposed.
In the midst of the grinding three-year war, Russia has been reclaiming territory in its Kursk region that was previously occupied by Ukrainian forces six months ago.
The results of Tuesday’s Trump-Putin call indicate a shift in the US position from just a week ago. However, both leaders agreed to initiate further peace talks promptly in the Middle East.
Following the call between Trump and Putin, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who was in Helsinki for an official visit, expressed openness to a ceasefire concerning energy infrastructure but sought more details before committing.
Zelensky accused Putin of rejecting the ceasefire proposal after Russian drone attacks targeted civilian infrastructure, including a hospital in Sumy and power supplies in Slovyansk.
US involvement and proposed ceasefire
President Trump characterized his call with Putin as productive, announcing an immediate ceasefire on energy and infrastructure as a starting point for broader peace negotiations.
However, the fate of the US proposal for a full ceasefire, which was accepted by Ukraine during talks in Jeddah, remains uncertain.
The White House’s statement following the Trump-Putin call emphasized the importance of an energy and infrastructure ceasefire, with subsequent discussions on a maritime ceasefire in the Black Sea and ultimately a comprehensive peace agreement.
While the limited ceasefire plan was viewed as a positive step by some leaders like German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, calls for a complete ceasefire persist.
British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer reiterated the UK’s unwavering support for Ukraine following the Trump-Putin call.
As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how further negotiations between the US, Russia, and Ukraine will progress in pursuit of a lasting settlement.
