The killer boat, MV Temper was later retrieved from lake Victoria after killing 33 revelers near Mutima beach in Mukono. Many others narrowly survived.
The government discovered that the killer boat was in poor state and most revelers were not putting on life jackets which was done illegally because in law, no one is supposed to travel on water without a life jacket,’’says the govt.
According to experts, a life jacket helps someone to easily float on water, it will not allow the head to submerge in the water so easily for at least an hour until the rescue team comes.
Many people think that wearing a life jacket could be a guarantee surviving on water in case an accident happens, but it’s not according to the vice chairperson of Bule Bule landing site in Mukono, Mr Tamale Hussein
Mr Tamale says that many people who travel on water have no clue on how to fasten life jackets and it can be a miracle for them to survive in case of an accident.
There’s always professional people who can easily help you fasten the life jacket for you and that’s when it can do the job,’’he says.
For a professional person to help you, he / she has to open the front part of the jacket to allow you pass your arms through it, after that, the expert will fix your hands underneath the shoulders of the jacket and pulling it straight while the traveler’s hands are out.
After that, the expert will help fasten or zip all the clasps to make the jacket fit proper.
The life jacket shouldn’t be fastened very tightly neither too loose just to make sure the person using it is comfortable.
It’s always a wise thing to put on a life jacket which is equivalent to your weight, if you’re 70 kgs, even the jacket you should wear must be of that weight,’’says Mr Tamale.
Look for the best places to buy quality life jackets in Kampala, avoid buying anything on market, like some fishermen do to fulfill the ministry requirements.
