The trial which lasted six weeks saw 11 accusers take the stand including 9 women and two men.
They explained the sexual humiliation, exploitation, and violence meted onto them under the watch of the singer.
The jury found the “Burn it Up” singer guilty on the indicated charges after two days of court proceedings. They will sentence the 54-year-old on the 4th of May 2022 and could spend over 10 years behind bars.
According to the prosecutors, the talented singer used his popularity and wealth to entice his prey by promising to further their music carers.
The majority of accusers added that they were underage by the time these sexual offenses took place.
They also found R Kelly in breach of the Mann Act which prohibits interstate sex trafficking.
The media was not able to see the singer’s facial expression since he was wearing a face mask while he sat at his court desk.
This verdict comes after a court in the State of Illinois cleared R Kelly of child pornography charges in 2008.
Most of the singer’s accusers were black unlike other fellow entertainment bigwigs such as Harvey Weinstein and Bill Cosby.
The accusations gained momentum in 2019 after the release of a documentary titled ‘Surviving R Kelly’.
According to court records, the victims were usually hand-picked from his concerts. They would there and then promise to make them join the singer’s crew with promises of promoting their music careers.
However, to their shock, they treated them to a strict code of rules and viciously punished if they breached his rules dubbed ‘Robs rules.”
One of the victims the singer was found guilty of abuse is the late R&B female singer Aaliyah. Kelly married Aaliyah in 1994-95 at a time when she was still underage with the singer in his mid-20s.
Federal prosecutors in the Eastern District of New York further proved that the singer was guilty of running a criminal enterprise. Its sole purpose was to lure boys, girls, and women for Kelly’s sexual pleasure.
