Spanish midfielder Martin Zubimendi has rejected Liverpool to stay at his boyhood club, Real Sociedad. The Kops were hoping to wrap up the transfer ahead of the new campaign that will be starting this week.
However, the 25-year-old decided to stay with the La Liga side despite the English side offering a much more lucrative contract.
Arne Slot’s side had expected to complete the deal in the region of about 60 million pounds. However, according to transfer guru, Fabrizio Romano, the player decided against the transfer.
This is not the first time he is opting to stay in Spain. Both Arsenal and Bayern Munich attempted to sign him in the recent past but he turned down either deals.
“Martín Zubimendi rejects Liverpool after he did the same with Bayern and Arsenal opportunities in recent years. Unconditional love for Real Sociedad, as he’s staying; open to signing new deals. Contract proposal from Sociedad was way lower than Liverpool’s contract bid.”
Martin Zubimendi is one of the most talented creative midfielders in current modern football. Liverpool, which is undergoing a transition after the departure of Jurgen Klopp thought this would be their first deal of the summer transfer window.
They are yet to bring in any new signings under their new Dutch manager.
The club has been impressive in the preseason games going unbeaten in the 4 games they played. They won 3 including beating league rivals Arsenal and Manchester United while they drew the other.
The 19-time league winners will begin their Premier League campaign on Saturday as they host newly promoted Ipswich Town at Anfield.
