Reasons Why Ugandan Mothers Still Die In Labour

Up to now, Uganda still registers a high rate of mothers dying in Labour. With all the technology there, doctors and hospitals, we ask ourselves why Uganda still registers a high rate of maternal mortality rate.

The government had endeavored to build hospitals so that mother’s can have access to medication especially when they are pregnant. After all this, why do we still have a high maternal mortality rate.

According to Soul Foundation’s article Ensuring Every Woman Can Deliver With Dignity, Uganda registers 440 deaths per 100,000 live births. 1 out of every 49 will die due to complications of pregnancy.

Most of these cases are registered in Government hospitals. We can say perhaps they are overwhelmed by the number of mothers and yet the midwives are inadequate. Most witnesses however say it’s because doctors are being too careless and some-what callous when attending to these mothers.

Some doctors instead of making life priority, they make money the priority need for safe delivery. When you go to government hospitals you will find mothers giving birth in the corridors of hospitals, yet doctors and nurses are just by-passing them. A mother can bleed to the point of death but no doctor will attend to her because she has no money to give.

The Problem Of Some Mothers

Sometimes even the mothers are to blame. Some of them do not go for antenatal care from the time they conceive. They only remember the hospital when its delivery time and therein they find complications.

People have to be sensitized about the need for antenatal treatment. People should be discouraged from going to herbalists. They have also contributed to the high maternal mortality rate in Uganda, especially in rural areas.

The government should add more learned medical workers in hospitals to reduce the work load. Supervisions has be made to ensure every one does their work diligently. Medics should perhaps be motivated again for example increase their salaries, make working conditions conducive so that they enjoy their work.

Above all, medics should know that their work is more of a calling than just a job for money. They should learn to put lives before money because they studied to save lives.

We should all be equally concerned about this, we all have mothers at least. Let us be empathetic and join hands together to save our mothers from dying in Labour.
