Rebel Gets Arrested In West Nile Region

The Joint Security Task Teams of the Police and UPDF in North West Nile Region and Obongi district recently made an arrest. They announced that they arrested a member of the Uganda National Rescue Front II ( UNRF ), a self-styled rebel group.

The rebel group is apparently responsible for several armed robberies as well as violent attacks in Yumbe and Obongi districts.

The police identified the suspect as Bashir Surundu, 21, a resident of Ayago village, Okuyo Parish, in Obongi district.

Upon interrogation, he admitted to being a rebel, who was searching for food at the River shore, to take to his other colleagues who included; Adinani Renda of Kulubi, Yumbe district, Akange Thuthu of Tikijure, Yumbe; Ngulu resident of Waka, Itula sub-county, in Obongi, Jamali of Tikijure Town Council and “Boy” of Tikijure as well. The suspect was handed over to the UPDF, at Kulukulu barracks for further interrogation,” said Fred Enanga, the police spokesperson in a statement.

Enanga further said their police commanders demanded other suspects on a list provided by the captured. These include Aris Habibu and Yasin Ssadala Dinga.

It should be noted that the vigilance of the residents at Parolinya landing site led to the arrest, something the authorities commended.

On a flipped page, Enanga revealed that they intercepted an ADF recruit in Kigezi and Bunagana. The recruit was identified as Ashiraf Ssempebwa, a 29 year old, farmer of Nakabiso village, Kavule Parish, Kiringente in Mpigi district.

Authorities intercepted him together with his 21-year-old wife Nansamba Fatuma and their two children. The family got busted while trying to cross into DR Congo to join the ADF rebel ranks.
