He said with this, they will keep the population healthy and reduce government spending on procuring drugs.
Todwong made these comments on Friday as he addressed Makerere University medical students. These were attending their scientific conference organized by the Federation of Uganda Medical Students Association (FUMSA).
“The government has been prioritizing prevention of diseases caused by a change in lifestyle by preaching behavioral change than cure. This is because it has been very expensive to sustain treatment of patients in our hospitals,” Todwong said.
He further implored the medics to use the opportunity of trust by the population to advise them, especially the youth.
He further said the bill of work in hospitals emerges from basic practices that people unknowingly undertake. Yet if they advise them early enough, they can avert.
Todwong also commented on the unemployable youths institutions drop for lack of practical skills despite graduating from Makerere.
He, therefore, called upon training institutions to focus more on imparting skills to their students before releasing them into the competitive job market.
“I advise that you spend your time on getting required skills and the best qualifications such that in case you miss out on government jobs, the private sector can take you up,” Todwong told medical students.
Before his arrival, the University Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe opened the conference and urged students to uphold professional ethics in their noble profession and serve humanity diligently.
