Rukiga District; Floods Leaves Residents Stranded And Counting Losses

Kashambya Sub-county residents in Rukiga district registered big losses after a heavy downpour. The storm lasted several hours which eventually led to heavy flooding over the weekend.

Elineho Bandaganire, the area Sub-county chairperson revealed the worst hit areas. He said these include Nyarubisi, Nyarugororo, and Nyaruhanga cells in Kitanga parish. Elineho said that the flood destroyed properties , farmlands and foodstuffs worth millions of shillings.

He also said the district is currently worried about the hunger that might hit the area due to the mass destruction due to the flood. Apparently 70% of the farmlands expected to give food to the residents got destroyed leaving little hope of a food source.

Some of the victims interviewed revealed that their houses, farms, livestock and food crops worth several millions of shillings were destroyed. They said this means that they have no way forward at present of where to start planning for the future from.

Consequently, they appealed to the government to come to their rescue before the situation worsens.

It should be noted that the area has for years been experiencing floods whenever it rains in their area. It is also feared that the rainfall is far from over. This might further destroy the remaining part of the community.

Robert Mbabazi Kakwerere, the Rukiga District Chairperson said that they are aware of the catastrophe. They are therefore choosing to write to the relevant authorities especially the office of the prime minister for assistance.

When contacted, the Rukiga county legislator Hon Roland Byomugyenyi Bish said that he has dispatched a team to assess the damages. He said he is also personally soliciting some assistance from relevant offices.
