Following Israel’s launch of Operation Rising Lion, officials from Russia expressed concern over the escalating situation in the Middle East, deeming it “alarming” and “dangerous.” Despite this, Russian media highlighted potential benefits for Moscow amidst the crisis.
Russian media pointed out several potential advantages for Russia, including a projected increase in global oil prices that could enhance Russia’s financial position.
Additionally, the conflict could divert global attention away from Russia’s actions in Ukraine, potentially shifting the focus elsewhere.
Moreover, if Russia’s offer to mediate in the conflict was accepted, it could position Russia as a significant player in the Middle East and a promoter of peace, despite its involvement in Ukraine.
As Israel’s military operation continued, Russian analysts began to acknowledge the risks and potential costs for Moscow.
The inability to prevent Israel’s significant strike on a country with which Russia had recently formed a strategic partnership raised concerns about Russia’s position in the region.
Despite political condemnations of Israel, Russia seemed hesitant to provide military support to Iran, highlighting the complexities of its alliances in the Middle East.
Strategic concerns for Moscow
The loss of key allies in the Middle East, such as Bashar al-Assad in Syria, has heightened Moscow’s apprehensions about potential regime changes in the region.
The strategic partnership with Iran, while emphasized in previous agreements, does not mandate military intervention on Russia’s part. The evolving dynamics in the Middle East pose challenges for Russia’s geopolitical interests and alliances.
As President Vladimir Putin attends the International Economic Forum in St. Petersburg, Russia seeks to showcase its global engagement despite tensions with Western countries over the conflict in Ukraine.
The forum, once likened to “Russia’s Davos,” now serves as a platform for demonstrating Russia’s continued international participation.
Against the backdrop of economic discussions, geopolitical considerations, particularly concerning the Middle East and Ukraine, remain pivotal in Russia’s diplomatic agenda.
