Russia Vows ‘Tangible’ Response If US Long-range Missiles Used Against Its Territory

Russia has issued a stern warning in response to the approval by President Joe Biden for the use of US long-range missiles by Ukraine. The Russian foreign ministry stated that any attack using these missiles on Russian territory would prompt a strong and proportionate reaction.

This would signify direct US involvement in hostilities against Russia, according to the ministry’s statement.

President Biden’s decision to allow the use of US long-range missiles on targets in Russia marks a significant policy shift just two months before his term ends.

It remains unclear whether President-elect Donald Trump was consulted on this decision or if he will uphold it, given his pledge to end the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

Tensions have escalated as Russia intensifies attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure amid a stalemate on the battlefield. The conflict, now in its 1,000th day, shows no signs of abating.

International involvement

The US decision comes as North Korean troops arrive in Russia’s Kursk region to support President Vladimir Putin’s forces.

Reports suggest a substantial deployment of troops and weaponry from North Korea to aid Russia. President Zelensky of Ukraine hinted at potential use of the US missiles in Kursk as a strategic move.

The approval of long-range missiles by the US, with potential similar authorizations from the UK and France, is viewed in the West as a message to Putin that a military victory in Ukraine is unattainable.

While Putin has not publicly commented on this development, his spokesman criticized the US action, accusing it of exacerbating the situation.

Meanwhile, US officials have made it clear to Russia that they will respond to the increased Russian attacks and the presence of North Korean forces.

President-elect Trump, who is set to assume office in January, has yet to address Biden’s decision. His promise to end US involvement in foreign conflicts, including the Ukraine war, raises questions about the future direction of American foreign policy.

Zelensky anticipates Trump’s involvement in facilitating a peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia in the coming year.
