Russian Government Threatens To Ban Facebook Twitter And Google

Towards the end of last week, Russian government agency Roskomnadzor that oversees media and communications, threatened to block access to Facebook, twitter and Google if the social media giant fail to hand over data on certain Russian bloggers.

The Russian government agency wanted Facebook, twitter and  Google, hand over data for users, specifically Russian bloggers with more than 3,000 daily readers . Rozkomnadzor also asked the social media giants to delete the information which encourages protests and other unauthorized public events.

The Russian President Vladimir Putin promised not place the Internet under government control,  in 2014, a law passed allowing the Russian prosecutors the right to block sites without a court ruling in case if those sites hold content about protests unauthorized  by the government.

The Russian gov’t could join countries like Burma, North-korea, Saudi Arabia and China for instance in April twitter was temporarily banned by the Turkish government because of showing pictures for the death of a Turkish prosecutor.

However, its not yet clear if the social network giants will comply with the demand of the Russian gov’t agency.
