Campaigners and migrants failed to win an injunction last week against the government policy in the High Court.
However, apparently, the number facing removal to Rwanda’s capital Kigali on Tuesday fell to single figures. If the UK sends some asylum seekers to Rwanda who usually arrives there illegally, this will undermine smuggling gangs.
The Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS), who represent 80% of Border Force staff, along with the charities Care4Calais and Detention Action brought the appeal.
Later on today, they will hear a separate case in the High Court on Monday. This follows another refugee charity, Asylum Aid, who applied for an urgent interim injunction against the flights to the East African nation.
Charities, religious leaders, and opposition parties have repeatedly criticized the Rwanda policy. The Prince of Wales also reportedly criticized the policy and is understood to have privately described it as “appalling”.
Rwanda’s high commissioner to the UK Johnston Busingye told reporters that his country would be a “safe haven” for migrants.
Apparently, they will consider the vast majority of people who take illegal routes to enter the UK for relocation to Rwanda. Such illegal routes include unauthorized boats and stowing away in lorries.
However, they will only relocate adults, meaning they won’t separate families. As of Friday, they had notified up to 130 people that they could remove them.
