Rwanda Introduces Fine For Improper Wearing Of Masks

Rwandan authorities announced in the country’s capital Kigali that people will be fined for the improper wearing of masks. The said fine will total up to $10(about 37,000 Ugandan Shillings) for not wearing a mask properly in public.

The fine will also go for violating the 2m (6ft) social distance rule in public as well as ignoring the night-time curfew. Authorities will fine party organizers up to $200 and the attendees fined $25. Wearing of masks is currently non-negotiable in Rwanda.

Rwanda currently has 4,200 reported cases of the coronavirus and 17 deaths. However, these measures to reduce the spread of the virus have led to a backfire on twitter from natives.

“I wonder if heavy penalties will scare the virus away or will (financially) ruin people furthermore,’’ one person tweeted.

Some of the people that violated these measures forcefully spent a night or day held in a stadium or school building. In the sub-Saharan region, Rwanda became the first country to impose a total lockdown after confirming its first cases.

Due to the lockdown and restrictions, the economy has deteriorated and people hope the restrictions slow the virus’ spread.

Some believe that it will be easier to boost the economy again if a vaccine or cure is discovered. Because the fewer the patients, the quicker the cure will work.
