In the statement, she said no school should open before January 10, whether it operates day or boarding. All international schools have also been asked to comply with these dates.
‘’Schools which have already communicated to parents a staggered reopening plan that goes beyond January 13, 2022, may retain such a plan provided no learners report before January 10,’’ reads the statement.
President Museveni, as he addressed the nation last Friday, tasked the ministry to release separate reopening dates for Kampala schools.
He used this as a measure to mitigate road traffic as schools reopen next week.
In Mpigi and Wakiso, boarding students in A-level and lower primary will report on January 10. For O-level students, and those in primary five, six, and seven will arrive on January 12, 2022.
As schools reopen, Lamaro said it is the responsibility of the learner’s parents or guardians to ensure that learners have masks to travel. At the school level, the ministry will not issue reusable face masks to learners like in 2021.
While releasing guidelines for the full reopening, the ministry called for the effective utilization of school facilities to control the spread.
‘’Safe temporary shelters, such as tents, may be used as classrooms. Open-air spaces, such as tree shades may be improvised as temporary venues for some classes,’’ read the guidelines.
They further said if available, they should prioritize the use of main halls, dining rooms, and other large rooms as classrooms. This would ensure that available teachers cater to a sizable number of learners per class.
Authorities have tasked school heads to place foot-operated handwashing facilities at all strategic points and report any new infections.
