Schools Should Justify The Need To Hike Fees, Ministry Of Education

The Secretary to the Education Policy Review Commission (EPRC), Brighton Barugahare, has said schools should justify the need for hiking school fees.

This has come after concerns raised by parents regarding the drastic increase in fees as school resumes on 5th September.

Up until now, school administrators say parents should understand the economic situation in the country that has pushed them to increase fees.

However, Barugahare has said letters have been sent out to schools about the hiked fees.

“The Ministry of Education is not silent on the school fees hike. Circulars have been written to schools informing them to write to the Permanent Secretary justifying the need to increase fees. The spirit behind government policy is the need for every citizen to have access to quality education.”

Barugahare says at the moment, fees increment is illegal because the government has not cleared any school to increase fees. In fact, he says most schools are only increasing fees for their own selfish interests.

“There is no threshold, but we think the threshold should be costs that cover education-related costs. When we were interrogating some of the budgets given to us, we found that it is just an omnibus, including development costs.”

Since the opening of schools after Covid, parents and school owners have been at loggerheads over high fees. However, government had never really come out to do anything tangible about this.
