Hip-hop icon Sean “Diddy” Combs has been denied bail following his not guilty plea in a significant sex-trafficking case. A federal judge in New York has ordered the musician to remain in custody, citing concerns that he poses a “serious flight risk.”
The 54-year-old Combs was arrested on Monday, with prosecutors accusing him of running a criminal enterprise since at least 2008.
This operation allegedly involved drugs and violence to coerce women into fulfilling his sexual demands. A 14-page indictment charges him with racketeering, sex trafficking by force, and transportation for prostitution.
If found guilty on all counts, the rapper and producer could face a prison sentence ranging from 15 years to life. During his court appearance in Manhattan, Combs, dressed in a black T-shirt and grey sweatpants, firmly stated his plea: “Not guilty.”
Disturbing revelations of control
Court documents detail how Combs allegedly exploited his celebrity status to lure women into extended sexual encounters referred to as “Freak Offs.” The indictment claims he used controlled substances to maintain their compliance during these acts.
US prosecutor Damian Williams revealed that law enforcement uncovered firearms, ammunition, and over 1,000 bottles of lubricant during recent raids on Combs’s properties in Miami and Los Angeles.
Among the seized items were three semi-automatic rifles with altered serial numbers and a drum magazine. Prosecutors hinted that more charges could arise as the investigation unfolds.
Combs’s attorney, Marc Agnifilo, announced that an appeal against the bail decision has already been initiated, with a hearing scheduled for Wednesday. Agnifilo expressed unwavering belief in his client, asserting, “He didn’t do these things. There’s no coercion and no crime.”
Accusations of abuse and coercion
Federal prosecutors allege that Combs has a history of abusing and coercing women to fulfill his sexual desires while protecting his reputation. The indictment describes a criminal enterprise under his direction that allegedly engaged in sex trafficking, forced labor, kidnapping, arson, and bribery.
While the indictment does not specify how many women are involved, it highlights previous accusations against Combs.
Last November, his ex-girlfriend, Casandra Elizabeth Ventura, filed a civil lawsuit detailing violent abuse, which he denied but later settled. In May, he publicly apologized after footage surfaced appearing to show him assaulting Ventura.
The recent indictment adds to a growing list of sexual assault allegations against Combs, one of the most influential figures in rap history. Four women, including Ventura, have filed lawsuits accusing him of sexual and physical abuse.
A reputation under siege
In response to the allegations, Sean has described the claims as “sickening” and accused accusers of seeking financial gain.
Recently, he returned a ceremonial “Key to the City of New York” after Mayor Eric Adams requested its return, and Howard University revoked his honorary degree.
Despite his legal troubles, Combs is credited with launching the careers of numerous artists, including Usher, Mary J. Blige, and Notorious B.I.G., during the 1990s and 2000s. However, the unfolding legal drama threatens to overshadow his storied legacy in the music industry.
