Former Gospel Singer Seku Martin Reveals Why Most People Try To Speak Like Whites After Moving Abroad

Veteran former Gospel singer Seku Martin has opened up about why most Africans tend to try to speak in foreign accents after moving abroad. The singer and pastor said that he also used to look at such people in an awkward way.

He used to think that these people are just brainwashed and have rural urban excitement.

He couldn’t understand why someone would try to twist their tongues to speak like the whites. It was not until he himself moved there and started working.

Apparently, he would speak English with his Ugandan accent while communicating to his workmates. However, it would waste a lot of time for either party.

This is because they wouldn’t hear what he would have said properly. However, when he started twisting his tongue to sound like them, things became easier. Communication became very fluent and they wouldn’t ask him to repeat what he had said.

Therefore, he reached to a point and got stuck in speaking with this alienated white accent. According to Seku Martin, it’s not ‘malala’ as most people call it when one speaks with such an accent. It’s rather a developed habit.

I used to think that these people who had moved abroad were full of pride and boastful when they would return here speaking English with a foreign accent. It wasn’t until I myself moved abroad. When I started work, my colleagues would all the time be saying pardon, what did you say. So I decided to start speaking like them and they would hear me properly. So it became a habit and contrary to what I thought as pride, it’s rather a habit,” he said.

This could explain why most people who move abroad come back with a foreign accent trying to speak like whites. This is more common among pastors and musicians.
