Bilal al-Sudani died during a gunfight following a descent by US troops on a mountainous cave complex in northern Somalia. They had hoped to capture him according to US officials.
Additionally, 10 of Sudani’s Islamic State associates were also killed at the scene. No American casualties were recorded. However, the only injury to an American in the raid was that one service person was bitten by a US military service dog, the official added.
“On January 25, on order from the president, the US military conducted an assault operation in northern Somalia. This resulted in the death of a number of ISIS members, including Bilal al-Sudani,” Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin said in a statement.
He further revealed Sudani’s involvement in the growing presence of ISIS in Africa. He was also in charge of funding operations of the group globally.
“From the mountain base, Sudani funded ISIS branches in multiple locations across the world. Some of these included Somalia, Islamic-State Khorasan, the arm operating in Afghanistan,” a US official said on condition of anonymity.
This operation was in planning for months, with the US troops rehearsing at a site replicating Sudani’s hideout.
