The rocket fire in Gaza started from different locations at 6:30am local time (3:30 GMT) earlier today. It went on for almost half an hour.
Air raid sirens were heard as far away as Tel Aviv, some 70 km (40 miles) to the north. This prompted authorities to instruct Israelis to stay near bomb shelters in their homes.
According to reports, a 70-year-old woman sustained critical injuries after a rocket hit a building in Southern Israel. In another area, a 20-year-old man sustained moderate injuries after a rocket shrapnel hit him.
Residents of Gaza also said they heard armed clashes along the separation fence with Israel near the southern town of Khan Younis.
They then saw significant movement of armed Palestinian fighters but Israel military didn’t give additional details.
Benjamin Netanyahu, the Prime Minister of Israel said he would meet with top security officials in the coming hours.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility from Hamas, the armed military movement in control of the Gaza Strip. Also, the smaller Islamic Jihad movement that has fought Israel for years did not claim responsibility for this attack.
Israel’s military is yet to comment but they usually respond to rocket fire with air strikes, raising a possible wider fight.
These rockets come after weeks of intensifying tension along the volatile border between Israel and Gaza.
