South Africans have been in the spotlight for the past couple of weeks and days over what many have termed as xenophobia. They are it again and this time attacked their own singer, Tyla for sympathizing with model Chidimma Vanessa.
Chidimma has been in the headlines in South Africa after she auditioned for the Miss South Africa beauty pageant. She was doing well and was destined to be one of the top contestants to vie for the crown.
However, she got a lot of abuse, hate and threats from South Africans. They accused her of being a Nigerian who they can’t tolerate to represent their country.
It should be noted that her father is Nigerian and her mother is South African of Mozambique descent. However, she was born and grew up in South Africa.
The natives who have crafted a xenophobic name for themselves, especially towards fellow Africans didn’t want to hear any of this.
They harassed her online and the threats were soon turning physical thus Chidimma’s decision to withdraw from the pageant for her own and family’s safety.
Tyla has now sympathized with her. She said that although she will always stand with South Africans, she feels that they went too far with her. The Grammy Award winner said that the bullying she received was unnecessary.
“I will always stand with South Africa, I just feel regardless of the opinions… She was bullied and that’s what I don’t stand for.”
Meanwhile, the Miss Nigeria Pageant has now written to her inviting her to come and participate in their own edition.
