His problems began last month when he kissed the captain of the Spanish women’s national football team, Jenni Hermoso.
While handing out winners medals in Australia, Rubiales planted a mouth-to-mouth kiss onto Hermoso. She, however, seemed to have enjoyed it as she left smiling. It was after a few days that this incident began getting attention.
Despite Rubiales saying the kiss was consensual, Hermoso denied this. In fact, she filed a complaint against him last week.
The 46-year-old who has also been UEFA’s vice president said that he couldn’t continue with his work.
“I cannot continue my work,” he told Piers Morgan on his television show.
According to Hermoso’s prosecutor, a complaint of sexual assault and coercion has now been filed with the Spanish High Court. It should be noted that he was also provisionally suspended by FIFA.
“After the quick suspension carried out by Fifa, plus the rest of open proceedings against me, it is evident that I will not be able to return to my position,” Rubiales’ statement read.
“Insisting on waiting and holding on is not going to contribute to anything positive, neither to the federation nor to Spanish football.”
On his resignation which he had been adamant to tender in, he said that it was made in the back of advice from friends and family.
Luis Rubiales will now await a ruling from the Spanish High Court to know his fate. This case has overshadowed Spain’s triumphant victory over England in last month’s final.
