President Museveni is expected to meet the NRM Central Executive Committee regarding the speakership race. Museveni set this meeting last week for today so that they sort out issues between Oulanya and Kadaga. The competition between the two has brought tension in the NRM party. Members of the NRM are divided between the two especially because both of them have been speakers. Kadaga has been the speaker while Oulanya has been her deputy.
The first meeting the president conducted between the two wasn’t successful because the two couldn’t agree. Kadaga and Oulanya only decided to accuse each other. In a bid to resolve this, the party advised the two to stop campaigning which they didn’t do. Due to this, the party released a statement disqualifying Kadaga and Oulanya from the speakership race.
“As the National Resistance Movement, we cherish harmony and unity among our leaders. Those two attributes have led us to several achievements and milestones before. We don’t want our great party, the NRM to be torn apart simply because of differences among its senior leaders,” part of the statement read
“Therefore on this basis, it is NRM’s considered view that Right Hon Rebecca Kadaga and Rt, Hon Jacob Oulanyah be disqualified from the race for the speaker of the 11th Parliament.”
Despite the release of this statement, nothing has changed and this is why they are having this meeting today. Many expect this meeting to resolve issues between the two. It might also determine who is going to run for the speakership.
