Activists under the umbrella of Concerned Citizens Activists Uganda (CCAU) and Rubaga Social Justice Centre have urged Deputy Speaker, Anita Among to stop mocking victims of torture. They said this after Among apparently mocked Zaake.
He was talking about the way they tortured him in Parliament. Due to this, Zaake used vulgar language which consequently put his stay in Parliament in jeopardy.
As we speak, there is a campaign to impeach him from Parliament. 290 MPs have already signed on this paper but the activists are advising parliament to halt this.
Addressing journalists at Pope John Paul Memorial hotel, the activists said while it was wrong for Zaake to use vulgar language in response to the deputy speaker’s mockery, it was also wrong for Among to mock Zaake over his torture ordeal. He is one of the victims of torture.
“Parliament should put a halt on the impeachment process of Zaake as backbencher parliament commissioner,” said Eric Opondo, secretary of the Concerned Citizens Activists Uganda.
Habib Buwembo, the chairperson of Rubaga Social Justice Centre said in such developed society, torture has no place.
“It was God’s grace that Zaake got treatment and healed from the wounds he experienced from torture,” he said.
Talks about torture are still a hot topic in the country. Until they do something, people are not willing to stay silent.
