Suspected Suicide Bomber Arrested By Army While Planning To Bomb Mourners At Lokech’s Funeral

The joint security agencies on Thursday arrested a man suspected to be a suicide bomber. The man allegedly planned to carry out an attack on mourners at the funeral of the late Deputy Inspector General of Police, Maj. Gen. Paul Lokech

The Uganda Peoples Defense Force spokesperson, Brig. Flavia Byekwaso confirmed the development on Thursday night.

During an interview, she revealed the identity of the arrested suspected suicide bomber to be one of Abdul Katumba, commonly known as Ben.

‘’We have learnt that Katumba was with another person in the mission but he managed to sneak off and we are currently hunting for his whereabouts,’’ she said.

The duo started their plot from Kampala, where they aimed at attacking mourners at the deceased’s home in Kitikifumba.

Byekwaso said their joint intelligence team trailed the two men after they became suspicious until they netted the suspects. They caught them in one of the hotels in Pader district on Thursday morning according to Byekwaso.

According to intelligence, the two wanted to have revenge for their Al-Shabaab extremists and associates that were suppressed in Somalia.

Preliminary investigations also indicate that upon searching Katumba’s room, security seized a suicide jacket and other explosives.

These were intended to be used at Lokech’s funeral that took place on Wednesday.

‘’Having failed to execute their mission at the deceased’s home in Kampala, the attackers decided to travel to his home district in Pader to fulfill their agenda. But we thank God our intelligence team finally managed to block them,’’ Byekwaso said.

Security plans to recover CCTV footage from the cameras at the residence of Lokech in Kira as well as surrounding areas. With this, they intend to ascertain the movements of the perpetrators.
