Geoffrey Matala, a mechanic and a resident of Kisegya village in Isunga Sub County was the convict. The incident happened on Saturday night at Kagadi Police.
Julius Hakiza, the Albertine region police spokesperson gave the identification of the now-deceased Geoffrey. He said they arrested the prisoner for allegedly stealing a motorcycle. Hakiza also said they found Geoffrey’s body dangling in the police cells.
The diseased used a piece of blanket to commit suicide according to Hakiza.
There were five suspects in cells at the time of the incident. However, it is not clear how Geoffrey committed suicide amidst all the suspects. Hakiza said the five suspects are under interrogation to establish how the deceased killed himself in their presence.
In December 2020, a female inmate killed another inmate at Masindi Government prison. It is possible that it could have been the same case as regards to the death of Geoffrey.
