This increased the risk of floods and landslides according to the weather agency in the country.
They forecast the downpours to continue for several days over a large swathe of the country from the northern Tohoku region to Kyushu in the south.
‘’There is a possibility that a grave disaster will occur in the coming days,’’ a Japan Metrological Agency (JMA) official said.
A landslide hit a house in Unzen city with one woman in her 50s feared dead. The heaviest downpour was in Hiroshima prefecture.
This is where authorities issued non-compulsory evacuation orders to at least 69,500 people.
The land ministry also warned that water levels are extremely high in three rivers, two running through the Hiroshima region.
The other river runs through southern Kumamoto. Scientists say climate change is intensifying the risk of heavy rain in Japan and elsewhere. This is because a warmer atmosphere holds more water.
On Friday, the JMA also said that they expect 300 millimeters of torrential rains in the 24hours from 6 am on Friday in the northern part of Kyushu.
As for many other parts of the country, they forecast 200 to 250 millimeters of rain.
