Authorities have responded to escalating violence in the Namisuka wetland of Tororo District, following intense clashes between communities from Sop-Sop and Merikit sub-counties. Tragically, these confrontations have resulted in the deaths of two individuals: one died at the scene, while the other succumbed to injuries in the hospital.
Albert Amula, the Deputy Resident District Commissioner for Tororo, confirmed the presence of police in the area.
He emphasized that their deployment is crucial for preventing further violence and safeguarding residents. “The police will remain in the area until the situation is calm and under control,” Amula assured, highlighting the importance of maintaining peace.
Local leaders, including Sop-Sop Sub-County Chairperson William Nyaboro, are urging swift investigations to hold those responsible for the violence accountable.
Nyaboro pointed out that the Namisuka wetland has been a site of numerous fatalities over the years, stressing the need for decisive action from security forces to prevent further loss of life
District Chairperson John Okea identified longstanding boundary disputes as a key factor driving the violence between the two communities, both claiming ownership of the wetland.
A pattern of violence
The Namisuka wetland, a vital water source for Tororo and parts of Butaleja District, has been at the heart of these conflicts for years
This recent outbreak of violence is not an isolated incident; similar clashes occurred in 2022, resulting in numerous injuries. Okea emphasized the urgent need for clear boundary demarcation to resolve these disputes and foster lasting peace in the area.
Compounding the issue, some political leaders have been accused of inflaming tensions for their own benefit. As the situation remains precarious, the ongoing police presence is expected to act as a deterrent against further violence and unrest in the community.
