According to Tanga, the first political parties were founded largely on the basis of religion. This history therefore cannot be changed.
Plus the church will also always be a critic of the government. Rather than look for a way to kick religion out of politics, how to balance its involvement should be the question.
“In Uganda, we had a big problem because our first political foundation was largely religion. The first foundation political parties were largely church-based.@DPSecretariat1- Catholic and UPC – Anglican. That history cannot be changed.
You cannot eliminate the church from politics. The church will always be a critic of the government. The only thing is, how do we find a balance?” said Tanga Odoi.
Tanga revealed that for example, politics in the Kigezi subregion had taken a religious trend unlike an ethnic one like other regions.
The ex-Makerere University professor also explained that government has always come in to help religious leaders. This is exhibited at times when the president avails material and financial support.
Furthermore, Tanga said that as a government, they want every religious institution to be useful to the government. This would be using specific days to preach to their congregation about specific government programs.
He also accused the opposition parties of instigating violence and then accusing the NRM government. Tanga cited an example of FDC in Soroti which is their stronghold. Yet however, they were accusing NRM of being violent which was the opposite.
Besides, Tanga explained why the NRM is in control of the government. He said that they control local government structure.
This is the base of government and any party that doesn’t have control in that format hangs in balance. He credited Mugisha Muntu’s ANT because of not concentrating on the political offices of MPs but rather the grass-roots.
