Real Madrid and Belgium goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, has self-exiled himself from the Belgian National Team. Courtois has said that he will not represent Belgium in international competitions as long as Domenico Tedesco is the manager.
Despite getting back to full fitness and starting for Real Madrid in the Champions League final, Courtois was not included in Belgium’s Euro 2024 squad. This is after Thibaut Courtois missed a significant portion of the previous season due to two knee injuries.
The 32-year-old, who has 102 caps, and Tedesco had a falling out in June 2023. This was after he left the Belgium team ahead of their Euro 2024 qualifying match against Estonia.
“Unfortunately, following the events with the coach and after much reflection, I have decided not to return to the Belgian national team under his management,” he wrote on Instagram.
“In this matter, I accept my share of responsibility. However, looking forward, my lack of confidence in him would not contribute to maintaining the necessary atmosphere of cordiality…. The [Belgium] federation, with whom I have had several discussions, accepts my position and the reasons that led me to this painful but coherent decision.
I regret possibly disappointing some fans. But I am convinced that this is the best course of action for Belgium, as it closes a debate and allows the team to focus on pursuing its goals.”
All four of the Red Devils’ games in the 2024 Euros were started by Al-Qadsiah goalkeeper Koen Casteels. Belgium was however eliminated by France in the round of 16.
