A devastating incident unfolded at the General Hospital in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, resulting in the loss of three lives and leaving many others wounded. The gunmen targeted medical personnel, police officers, and journalists during a scheduled briefing to announce the reopening of the country’s largest public hospital.
The harrowing attack took place on Tuesday, with reports indicating a grim scene of injuries and fatalities within the hospital premises.
Disturbing images circulating online depict the aftermath of the violence that transpired. The hospital, previously overtaken and ravaged by violent gangs, was only recently reclaimed by the Haitian government in July.
Tragic losses and official response
As the health minister’s arrival was awaited, chaos erupted as gunmen unleashed gunfire. Tragically, two journalists and a police officer lost their lives in the senseless act of violence.
In a solemn video address, Leslie Voltaire, the head of Haiti’s presidential transitional council, extended condolences to the families of the victims, emphasizing solidarity with the Haiti National Police and journalist associations. Assurances were given that repercussions would follow for those responsible.
The people of Haiti grapple with persistent and severe gang violence, despite recent governance transitions and international interventions.
Following the assassination of former President Jovenel Moïse in 2021, the country has been plagued by escalating violence. A staggering 85% of Port-au-Prince remains under the control of criminal gangs, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis.
Reports from the UN paint a grim picture, citing a significant death toll from violence in Haiti this year alone, pushing the nation to the brink of collapse.
