With the gulf between both sides, Vipers were expected to steamroll the army side. However, they instead struggled to break down their well-organized opponents.
Vipers’ attacking trio of Yunus Ssentamu, Cesar Manzoki and Milton Karisa all had multiple chances to put their side ahead in the first half. Their dreams were squashed by a lack of clinical finishing coupled with some excellent defending that kept UPDF afloat.
In the 33rd minute, Karisa thought he had given Vipers the lead but his header off Disan Galiwango’s corner kick brushed the crossbar.
Also, in the 36th minute, Galiwango fouled Ivan Ahimbisibwe in the penalty area and the referee pointed to the spot. Ahimbisibwe made no mistake from the spot, sending Fabien Mutombola the wrong way to give UPDF the lead.
In the second half, Vipers piled pressure on the UPDF goal and custodian Yusuf Wasswa and his defenders had their hands full.
They managed to hold their positions for so long. In the 74th minute, substitute Paul Mucureezi scored from a free-kick to level matters. They however failed to fashion out a winner.
Title rivals KCCA on 36 points, host Onduparaka on Saturday in Lugogo. A victory over the Caterpillars will also see them close the gap to Vipers to just one point. UPDF remain eighth on the table with 22 points after 18 games played.
Elsewhere, Express’ 15 game unbeaten run came to an end in a 1-0 loss to relegation-threatened Busoga United at Kakindu Stadium in Jinja.
