Musician Allan Toniks has told the Uganda Police to stop threatening citizens when they demand accountability from their leaders. This was concerning the pending 23rd July citizens’ march to Parliament about the high levels of corruption and misuse of office by different legislators.
The Police earlier notified all those attempting to participate in this march that they will be dealt with mercilessly. However, according to the Sunday singer, what Police is doing is wrong.
This is because this march is a peaceful one. It’s one where the youths want to express their dissatisfaction at the continued misuse of resources. And those in power just give them a slap on the wrist.
Therefore, demanding accountability is not hate speech. Thieves must be brought to the book.
“The 23rd July peaceful march is an outcry of what the youth see as unabated. Continuous looting of taxpayers money by govt officials who only get a slap on the wrist or protection!. Demanding #accountability is not hate speech. We just want thieves to stop & be brought to book,” Toniks said.
Meanwhile, Uganda Police said that as much as it’s the right of Ugandans to express their demands, they have a responsibility to work with it. They need to inform it before any processions are carried out lest it will foil them.
“Uganda Police Force is issuing a clear warning against attempts to incite violence or breach public order through uncontrolled demonstrations. The right to a peaceful protest will be respected, but police will not tolerate attempts to incite public disorder,” a statement reads in part.
