Uganda Police Warns Against Looming Demonstrations

The Uganda Police has issued a stern warning to people planning to demonstrate at the United Nations High Commission for Human Rights offices in Kololo.

This is after the government made a decision to curtail the office’s mandate in the country.

The government recently revealed that it is in position to protect initial human rights observations. It added said that it can do this through entities like the Uganda Human Rights Commission.

Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Patrick Onyango issued this warning to all Ugandans. He said this is because they received credible intelligence that some political activists planned demonstrations today.

He said these demonstrations are illegal because the Inspector General of Police did not receive any notice. Police reminded citizens that anyone planning a demonstration needs clearance from the IGP. Anything contrary to that would be an illegal demonstration.

“We appeal to members of the public not to participate in any illegal demonstrations. Whoever participates in any illegal demonstration shall be arrested and charged to court,” Onyango said.

Uganda Police further appealed to the citizens not to be lured into participating in illegal activities. He also warned that if they are caught involved in illegal activities police would treat them like criminals.
