The community of Butaleja District was shaken by a tragic event recently, as a suspected motorcycle thief met a brutal end at the hands of a mob in Jabusiba Village, Nakwasi Parish.
The deceased, identified as Richard Mwima, also known as Kajubi, hailed from Nakwasi Cell in Butaleja District.
An unfortunate series of events unfolded when Richard Mwima allegedly stole a red Bajaj Boxer motorcycle, bearing registration number UFU 799H, from David Odoi, a resident of Tororo District.
Promptly informed about the theft, Odoi reported the incident to the Central Police Station (CPS) in Tororo, setting off a chain of events.
Levie Keplimo, upon receiving the report, took it upon himself to track down the stolen motorcycle. His efforts led him to Leresi Village in Butaleja District, where he spotted the deceased riding the stolen vehicle.
Collaborating with the Chairperson of the Leresi Boda Boda stage, a group effort was initiated to locate both the suspect and the motorcycle.
Unveiling the tragic turn of events
The search culminated in a banana plantation near the deceased’s residence, where the stolen motorcycle was discovered concealed under dry bean husks.
Subsequently, the suspect was apprehended, and the recovered motorcycle was handed over to Butaleja CPS by Keplimo. Tragically, news soon surfaced of the suspect being lynched by a mob.
Preliminary police investigations revealed that the deceased was a notorious criminal with alleged involvement in numerous aggravated robbery and murder cases in the region.
Despite being a fugitive sought by law enforcement for prosecution, the suspect met a violent end at the hands of vigilantes.
Unmasking the criminal past
Law enforcement authorities, including the District CID Officer (D/CIDO), Scene of Crime Officers (D/SOCO), and a homicide team, descended upon the crime scene to collect evidence.
Subsequently, the deceased’s body was transported to Mbale City Mortuary for a postmortem examination.
As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with the incident. However, the police have unequivocally denounced the act of mob justice, emphasizing the importance of entrusting suspected criminals to the proper authorities for legal proceedings.
Moses Mugwe, the Regional Police Spokesperson for Bukedi South, reiterated the significance of upholding the rule of law and allowing due process to take its course.
