Tragic Mob Justice Claims Young Life In Luweero

In a shocking case of mob justice, a 22-year-old man named Abbey Nyanzi lost his life in Lunyolya LC1, Kalagala Subcounty, Luwero District. The incident, which escalated rapidly, has raised serious concerns about community safety and the consequences of vigilantism.

On a fateful Tuesday, Nyanzi and his 24-year-old brother, Yasin Kange, were accused of stealing chickens.

The situation took a turn for the worse when residents of Nabugolo town spotted the chickens allegedly in their possession. As the brothers walked through the area, a mob quickly formed, fueled by anger and the desire for retribution.

The situation intensified as the mob apprehended both men, taking Kange to the residence of the local area chairman. However, when it was discovered that the chairman was not available, tensions boiled over, leading to violent actions against Kange. The mob set their motorcycle ablaze, escalating the chaos.

While Kange was being attacked, Nyanzi managed to flee into a nearby bush. Unfortunately, the mob did not relent and pursued him. In a gruesome act, they violently assaulted Nyanzi before ultimately setting him on fire, a horrific end to a tragic misunderstanding.

Police response and investigation

Law enforcement was alerted and arrived promptly at the scene to document the incident. Both brothers were taken to Luwero Hospital for treatment, but tragically, Nyanzi succumbed to his injuries.

His body has been sent for a postmortem examination to determine the exact cause of death, while Kange is currently receiving medical care.

ASP Twineamazima Sam, the Police Spokesperson for the Savannah Region, condemned the act of mob justice, highlighting the importance of due process. “Taking the law into your own hands only leads to tragedy,” he stated. He urged the public to report any suspicions to the authorities rather than resorting to violence.

As the investigation continues, police have been collecting statements from witnesses and stressing the need for calm.

The tragic outcome of this incident serves as a grim reminder of the dangers of mob justice, calling for a collective effort to uphold the rule of law and prevent such occurrences in the future.
