Expressing his discontent with the handling of the high-stakes compromise by the current administration, Trump pointed out what he perceives as failures in bringing American prisoners back home.
Following the celebratory news of Gershkovich and Whelan’s release, White House officials clarified that the exchange did not involve any cash transactions.
Despite this assurance, Trump took to Truth Social to voice his skepticism, questioning the specifics of the exchange and alleging shortcomings in the diplomatic approach of the Biden administration.
Biden’s defiant response to Trump’s critique
Amidst Trump’s inquiries and criticism, it was revealed that Gershkovich and Whelan are part of a group of 24 prisoners from various countries, including the US, Germany, Poland, Slovenia, Russia, and Belarus, involved in the prisoner exchange facilitated by Turkish intelligence.
In response to Trump’s remarks, President Joe Biden swiftly countered the former president’s claims during a press briefing.
When questioned about the possibility of securing the hostages’ release without concessions, Biden retorted with a pointed jab at Trump, questioning why such actions were not taken during his own presidency.
Notably, David Whelan, the brother of Paul Whelan, had previously criticized Trump for his perceived inaction regarding his brother’s case until media attention prompted a response from the former president.
