Trump Says It’s More Difficult’ To Deal With Ukraine Than Russia

President Donald Trump recently expressed his struggles in handling diplomatic relations between Ukraine and Russia. He remarked that dealing with Ukraine posed more difficulties compared to Russia when attempting to mediate peace between the two nations.

Trump highlighted the positive relationship the US currently maintains with Russia, suggesting it might be more straightforward to engage with Moscow than Kyiv.

He also mentioned considering imposing substantial sanctions and tariffs on Russia until a ceasefire agreement is achieved with Ukraine.

The US temporarily suspended Ukraine’s access to certain satellite imagery, as confirmed by space technology company Maxar. This action followed Trump’s decision to halt military aid to Ukraine.

The situation escalated further after Russia launched a significant missile and drone attack on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.

Unconventional diplomacy

Trump’s direct communication with Russian President Vladimir Putin surprised NATO allies, given the strained relations with Moscow following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Despite Trump’s public disagreement with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, his foreign policy team has shown a more conciliatory stance towards Ukraine recently.

The US aims for Zelensky to agree to a deal that would grant American interests in Ukrainian minerals and prompt a swift truce with Moscow. Zelensky, on the other hand, seeks robust security guarantees for Kyiv as part of any agreement.

Suspension of satellite imagery access

In a significant move, the US temporarily suspended Ukrainian access to high-quality satellite imagery through the Global Enhanced GEOINT Deliver program. This decision aligns with the administration’s directive to support Ukraine.

As pressure mounts for Ukraine to align with Trump’s demands, senior US officials will meet with Zelensky’s team in Saudi Arabia.

Zelensky has expressed readiness for peace and proposed concrete steps to achieve it. The ongoing conflict in Ukraine underscores the urgency of finding a resolution to the crisis.

Multiple countries have shown interest in forming a coalition to assist Ukraine, while European leaders consider increased military expenditure.

Despite efforts to mend relations, clashes persist on the ground in Ukraine, emphasizing the need for diplomatic solutions and a path to lasting peace.
