Trump Says Many Elements Of Ukraine Deal Agreed To Ahead Of Putin Call

US President Donald Trump announced on Truth Social that significant progress has been made towards a peace agreement in Ukraine during discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The eagerly awaited phone call between the two leaders is scheduled for Tuesday morning. While agreements have been reached on certain elements, Trump emphasized that there is still much work to be done to achieve lasting peace in the region.

The urgency for resolution was underscored by the staggering toll of 2,500 soldier deaths each week from both sides, prompting Trump to express his anticipation for the upcoming call with Putin.

Prior to the phone call, Trump expressed optimism about the prospects of reaching a peace agreement and implementing a ceasefire during a briefing with reporters.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky criticized Putin for prolonging the conflict, emphasizing the urgent need to end the war to prevent further loss of human lives.

Within the Trump administration, there have been differing accounts regarding the progress of ceasefire negotiations, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio highlighting the focus on negotiation processes rather than specific conditions.

US envoy Steve Witkoff adopted a cautious stance following his meeting with Putin in Moscow.

The UK and France have called on Putin to demonstrate a genuine commitment to a peace deal with Ukraine.

French President Emmanuel Macron commended Zelensky’s willingness to consider a ceasefire proposal and challenged Russia to follow suit, emphasizing the need to halt the devastating impact of the conflict.

UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy urged Putin to agree to an immediate and unconditional ceasefire, warning of further actions by the UK and its allies to compel Russia to engage in serious negotiations.

White House optimism and focus on key issues

The White House expressed optimism on the eve of the Trump-Putin talks, highlighting the unprecedented closeness to achieving peace in Ukraine.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt affirmed Trump’s determination to secure a peace deal, with a specific focus on addressing critical issues such as the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant.

Trump hinted at discussions on territorial matters and power plants in the ceasefire negotiations, signaling a comprehensive approach to resolving the conflict.

While Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov remained tight-lipped on the agenda of the leaders’ discussion, Putin has outlined conditions for peace, including concerns about monitoring ceasefire implementation and the presence of Nato troops in the region.

The recent peace proposal discussed by Ukrainian and American delegates in Saudi Arabia outlined plans for a 30-day ceasefire, which Ukraine signaled its readiness to accept.

French President Macron and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney reaffirmed their unwavering support for Ukraine during a meeting, emphasizing the need for clear commitments from Russia to facilitate lasting peace in the region.
