Trump Says US Will Send Worst Criminals To Guantanamo Bay

US President Donald Trump has made a bold decision to construct a migrant detention facility in Guantanamo Bay, with plans to accommodate up to 30,000 individuals.

The President stated that this facility, to be located at the US Navy base in Cuba, would specifically house what he referred to as “the worst criminal illegal aliens posing a threat to the American people.”

Guantanamo Bay has a history of housing immigrants, a practice that has faced criticism from various human rights organizations.

Trump’s administration, represented by his “border tsar” Tom Homan, announced that an existing facility at the base would be expanded and managed by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

The intention is to transport intercepted migrants directly to this facility, ensuring the application of the highest detention standards.

Details regarding the cost and completion timeline of the facility remain unclear, raising questions about the practicality and feasibility of the President’s directive.

Legislative actions and implications

Cuba’s government swiftly condemned the plan, accusing the US of engaging in acts of torture and illegal detention on what they consider to be “occupied” land.

Trump’s announcement coincided with the signing of the Laken Riley Act, a law requiring undocumented immigrants arrested for theft or violent crimes to be held in jail pending trial.

Named after a tragic incident involving a Georgia nursing student, this legislation represents an early victory for the administration.

During a signing ceremony at the White House, Trump disclosed that the new executive order would task the departments of defense and homeland security with preparing the 30,000-bed facility.

Some migrants will be detained

Emphasizing the severity of the situation, he expressed the need to detain certain migrants in Guantanamo due to concerns about their potential return. The facility is expected to significantly increase the US capacity for holding undocumented migrants.

Guantanamo has been utilized by the US government for migrant operations over several decades, drawing scrutiny from various quarters for alleged inhumane treatment and indefinite detention practices.

The Trump administration’s proposal to expand the existing facility as part of a spending bill has sparked strong reactions, with the Cuban government condemning the move as an act of aggression and brutality.
