Trump Signs Order Aimed At Dismantling US Education Department

US President Donald Trump recently made a significant move in the realm of education policy by signing an executive order to dismantle the Department of Education.

This action fulfilled  a campaign promise and aligns with the desires of certain conservatives. The President criticized the agency for its perceived failures and pledged to redistribute the funds it manages back to individual states.

However, the closure of the agency would require congressional approval, leading to legal challenges against the order.

During the signing ceremony, President Trump highlighted the discrepancy between the significant amount of money spent on education in the US compared to other countries and the less-than-desirable academic performance of American students.

The administration aims to make cuts within legal boundaries and faces anticipated legal hurdles due to its efforts to downsize the federal government.

Despite praising the appointed Education Secretary Linda McMahon, Trump expressed his intention for her to be the last to hold that position, hinting at forthcoming changes within the administration.

Political maneuvering and future implications

While some lawmakers, like Senator Bill Cassidy, have voiced support for the department’s closure, the political landscape presents challenges as achieving the necessary majority in the Senate appears challenging.

Even if the department remains intact formally, the administration could significantly reduce its funding and staff, akin to its actions with the USAID, impacting various programs and services.

The executive order instructs McMahon to facilitate the closure process and ensure the uninterrupted delivery of essential services to the public.

The Department of Education, established in 1979, plays a vital role in managing student loans and supporting low-income students.

Trump’s criticisms of the agency for alleged ideological influences on students have sparked debates. The move has drawn criticism from the education sector, with concerns raised about the impact on students, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds.

As discussions continue on the department’s future, the broader implications on education policy and the welfare of American students remain uncertain.
