Trump Survives Assassination Attempt, Arrives In Wisconsin For Republican National Convention

Former US President Donald Trump defied adversity and arrived in Wisconsin for the Republican National Convention, just a day after surviving an assassination attempt.

Despite the shooting incident at a rally in Pennsylvania, where Trump was shot in the ear, the party conference in Milwaukee proceeded as scheduled.

Trump took to social media to express his consideration of delaying his trip, but ultimately decided against it, stating that he would not allow a shooter or potential assassin to dictate his schedule.

The attack on Trump has brought an increased focus on the safety and security of the event. However, Audrey Gibson-Cicchino, RNC coordinator for the US Secret Service, assured the public during a news conference in Milwaukee that there would be no changes to the security plan.

Thousands expected to attend the four-day event

With an estimated attendance of 50,000 people, the Republican National Convention promises to be a four-day jamboree of pageantry, politics, and policy. The party aims to make its case to voters ahead of the general election in November.

Every four years, both major US parties host conventions to formally select their presidential candidates and gear up for the final stretch of campaigning.

These conferences feature high-profile speakers, including prime-time speeches from the candidates themselves. Delegates from each state pledge their support to their chosen candidate and approve a platform.

For Trump, the convention is a mere formality as he has already secured enough delegates in the primaries to become the party’s presumptive nominee. The Democrats will hold their convention next month in Chicago.

Trump’s choice for vice president remains uncertain

As the dust settles from the assassination attempt, uncertainty looms over when Trump will announce his vice-presidential candidate and when they will speak at the convention.

Trump is expected to reveal his choice on Thursday night, while his son, Donald Trump Jr., is slated to speak on Wednesday.

Former rivals and unexpected speakers have made their way onto the guest list. South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, who initially planned to skip the RNC, will now attend and give a speech.

Republican firebrands Marjorie Taylor Greene and Kari Lake are also expected to make appearances. However, notable figures such as George W. Bush, Mike Pence, and Mitt Romney are absent from the guest list.

 Melania Trump’s highly anticipated appearance

Former First Lady Melania Trump, known for her rare public appearances, will attend the convention, marking her first major appearance of this election cycle. Her presence adds anticipation to the event.

Each day of the convention carries a theme: “Make America Wealthy Once Again” on Monday, “Make America Safe Again” on Tuesday, “Make America Strong Again” on Wednesday, and “Make America Great Once Again” on Thursday.

The party’s platform for this year spans 16 pages, with possible discussions on Project 2025, a longer think-tank proposal that Trump has distanced himself from. The demonstration by the Coalition to March on the RNC is also scheduled for Monday, with organizers expecting 5,000 participants from 125 liberal activist groups.

Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson assured the public that public safety is of utmost importance during the convention. The event has been designated as a national special security event, signifying its size and significance in the United States. Mayor Johnson emphasized the city’s commitment to ensuring a secure environment.
