One of the victims, Alice Sheila Namwanje, 12, studied at Naluse Primary School in Mukono Central Division. She met her demise after a speeding vehicle at Butebe Village on Kampala-Jinja highway knocked her dead.
It also left four other people with serious injuries. As soon as he realized what he did, the driver of the double cabin pickup truck, Registration Number UBK 108P, made his gate away.
The injured students are Jennifer Namatovu,12 from Naluse Primary School; Diana Namulindwa from Bishop Senior Secondary School; Mr Paul Kalyango, a Naggalama Girls Secondary school teacher; and an unidentified motorcycle rider.
One of the witnesses at the scene, Mpiima Mwesigwa said vehicles had stopped to give the people way to cross. However the driver of the double cabin overtook the vehicles and knocked dead the minor.
Patrick Onyango, the Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson said a manhunt for the driver had kicked off.
The other incident occurred in Buikwe district where the police arrested a driver accused of knocking a 13-year-old girl. The victim, Aine Kyeyune went to school at Nakidokolo Primary School, Namagoma in Luwero District.
The accident happened at the Nyenga-Kisoga-Katosi road as Kyeyune crossed the busy highway.
“It’s alleged that the deceased crossed the main road without being on the lookout for other road users and was fatally knocked,” Hellen Butoto, the Ssezibwa regional police spokesperson, said.
She appealed to parents to always accompany children as they cross such busy roads to avoid such accidents.
