The United Arab Emirates ( UAE ) has recently implemented a 90-day amnesty period, providing an opportunity for undocumented Ugandan workers to return home without the fear of incurring fines or facing detention.
This initiative, scheduled to run until December 2024, offers a temporary solution for Ugandans who lack proper documentation or are entangled in legal challenges within the UAE.
Esther Anyakun, the esteemed Ugandan State Minister for Labour, Employment, and Industrial Relations, officially announced this amnesty on November 11 in Kampala.
In her address, she emphasized the critical importance of undocumented Ugandans taking advantage of this window to journey back home safely. Anyakun urged them to reach out for assistance from the Ugandan embassy or make direct arrangements at the closest UAE airport for their departure.
To ensure a smooth transition for the returning individuals, Minister Anyakun highlighted that the Ministry of Labour is actively collaborating with the International Organization for Migration.
This strategic partnership not only focuses on facilitating safe repatriation but also includes provisions for counseling, rehabilitation, and reintegration programs tailored to assist those coming back to Uganda.
While the exact number of undocumented Ugandan workers set to benefit from the amnesty remains undisclosed, Minister Anyakun reiterated the government’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding the welfare of Ugandans residing and working abroad.
This amnesty serves as a pivotal measure in addressing the adversities faced by Ugandan migrant workers in the Gulf region, where they often endure harsh working conditions fraught with risks and challenges
