Uganda At 58, What Have We Achieved Or Are We Still Staggering

Uganda at 58 years since her independence. Obviously so much has been achieved but we still stagger in some areas. The day’s events however, is unlike other years, this time round, there are no public arranged ceremonies and celebrations due to Coronavirus. The president will be speaking to the nation from the state house in Entebbe.

The positives

Much as, the entertainment industry has its hands tied due to the SOPs, they have not sat back and have decided to organize an online independence concert. This means we have gone ahead in one way or another.

Much as we can’t celebrate this in big numbers as we usually do, the celebration has been taken online. These are some of the small  things we have achieved, we have embraced technology.

With Uganda at 58, I would say we have moved in all spheres since independence. Politically, we have reached somewhere. The multi-party system has improved our politics incredibly.

Yes, we are still on a journey but we are moving. People can ably stand and express themselves unlike the olden days. Our Music has greatly improved and even been nominated on international platforms.

The Negatives

Of course we are still lacking in one way or the other, we still have political unrest, domestic violence, gender inequality but we are getting there. The current government has tried to improve security especially in the urban areas. Freedom of expression though has been given to us completely, we are not badly off.

The guarantee of this freedom of speech or expression however, can not be said comfortably. Because of all these, is right to say happy independence Uganda or we should just stay tight-lipped until the real independence comes?

Either way, independence starts from the mind, if you feel independent, then why not celebrate it. If you don’t, then sit down and think.
