Emmanuel Okwi, the captain of the National football team, Uganda Cranes, has joined a new football club. Okwi, signed up for Erbil SC which plays in the top tier of Iraq football.
He joins Erbil from a fellow Iraqi side, Zawra FC. Erbil are four-time champions of the Iraq Premier League.
Okwi’s transfer to Erbil was announced on all the club’s social media handles. Emmanuel Okwi won’t have much time to settle in his new club as he’s expected to play for them this Friday 27th in a game against Al Basra.
The former SC Villa forward has now played for a total of 8 clubs outside Ugandan borders including Erbil. The others are Simba SC, Young African, Etoile Du Sahel (Tunisia), Sonderjyske (Denmark), Al Ittihad (Egypt) and Rwanda side Kiyovu FC.
Locally, the 30-year-old has played for only one club and that is SC Villa. Okwi has played for the Jogoos on three different spells.
He however is not the first Ugandan to feature for Erbil. His debut will make him the fourth Ugandan player for the club after Sula Matovu, Ivan Bukenya and Allan Kateregga aka Dancing Rasta.
The Ugandan will have a huge task to bang in the goals and help his team to a much better position. They currently occupy the 15th position on the 20-team table.
Erbil has collected just 12 points from 12 games. Their success in the league does not date so many years ago. They won the league trophy in the years (2006/7, 2007/8, 2008/9 and 2011/12).
Meanwhile, Erbil was founded on November, 3rd 1968. The club plays its home games at Franso Hariri Stadium which is a 25,000-seater stadium.
