Sarah Bireete, the executive director, Centre for Constitutional Governance has said the way Uganda is being run seems as though it has a royal tribe because it seems more like a monarchy than a republican.
“The purpose of term limits is to make sure that no single group of citizens have a monopoly over institutions of power. However, we have people who seem like a royal tribe in Uganda. Are we a monarchy or a republican?”
Hon. Fred Mukasa Mbidde added that for a family to lead for 20 years arises so many questions.
“If you have the same political party leading a country for over 20 years, there must be very serious intrinsic questions. And, if you have the same families leading a country for over 20 years, there must also be critical questions.”
According to Sarah Bireete, the spirit of the nation is rooted in the constitution. However, the constitution on its own without constitutionalism cannot be effective to deliver the wishes of the people as envisaged in the promulgation stage. She says this was the purpose of term limits.
A number of politicians have been talking about the state of Uganda. This is especially because of the way Kenya peacefully ran their elections. According to most politicians here, the greed and nepotism is taking Uganda down the drain.
