Uganda Loses Hosting Rights To International Aids Conference Due To Unstable Political Climate

The nation of Uganda has lost hosting rights for the International Aids conference after organizers cited a ‘risky’ environment. The International Conference on AIDS and STIs in Africa (ICASA) was scheduled to happen on December 6-11, 2021.

According to a statement from the Society For AIDS in Africa, the organizers, said the event will not happen in Kampala, Uganda. The statement dated December 14, 2020, said the reason for this is ‘’because of circumstances beyond their control.’’

‘’The Society For AIDS in Africa acknowledges that without peace, security, and a conducive environment for all, we have no option but to revoke the hosting rights of Uganda. The Society for AIDS in Africa apologizes for any inconveniences this might cause,’’ the statement partly reads.

The way forward

The even organizers will announce a new host country  in the forthcoming days to ensure the event’s happening as scheduled.

The ICASA conference is a major international AIDS conference that takes place in Africa every two years. It brings together over 10,000 delegates including scientists, policymakers, religious leaders, civil society leaders, and other important people.

These usually come together to talk about the response to HIV/AIDS and STIs.

The last conference happened in Kigali Rwanda from 2nd to 7th December 2019. At this same conference, they announced Uganda as the next host seeing off competition from Kenya, Nigeria, Zambia and, Tunisia.

In January 2020, UNAIDS Executive Director Winnie Byanyima cautioned the government against the continued human rights violations. She also said these violations posed a threat to the milestone and it has come to pass as she predicted.

As Uganda prepares for the 2021 general elections, some opposition rallies have been violently broken up. Some political analysts have said this act has projected the country poorly on an international basis.
