Uganda Police has warned political candidates that are still holding mass rallies in areas that were banned by the electoral commission. The electoral commission recently banned political activities in districts of Kampala, Wakiso, Luwero, Kalungu, Jinja, Masaka, among others.
Uganda Police spokesperson Fred Enanga said in a statement that the joint task force continues with its enforcement of the ban on campaigns in those areas.
‘’We know the unprecedented challenges with canvasing, many candidates find it not ideal. But we ask them to heed the public warning from the Electoral Commission about holding large gatherings at high-risk areas,’’ he said.
He went further to add that candidates should know the health and safety of Ugandans are of paramount significance. He also said candidates at all levels need to start planning on how to protect the electoral process as Covid-19 becomes worse.
Enanga advised all candidates to use alternative measures of campaigning. For example the use of social media platforms, television stations, among other means.
‘’We would like to issue a stern warning to candidates/political parties that continue to hold mass rallies. It is too dangerous. They have to adjust accordingly for the sake of protecting the health of the community,’’ Enanga warned.
